“SDGs” stands for” Sustainable Development Goals ” and were created by the United Nations.
These universal goals aim to help solve worldwide issues and create a brighter future.
Set by the United Nations on September 17th, 2015, these goals are hoped to be achieved by 2030.

In the local vicinity of Rusutsu Resort sits the majestic Mt Yotei (known as EZO Fuji),
surrounded by the clear waters of the Shiribetsu river.
Adjacent to the resort, the diverse nature of Lake Toya and Mt. Usu features sublime vistas and signs of volcanic activity.

Initiatives 1

Creating an environment for continual development and an active outdoor lifestyle

・Here at Rusutsu, enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle surrounded by stunning all-season nature to promote a culture of fitness, reduce stress and lifestyle related diseases.
・We welcome a wide range of school groups including; elementary schools, junior high schools, high schools, universities, vocational school’s special needs schools and disabled schools. Our aim is to facilitate educational activities in a natural setting.
・Special learning activities are also available to help learn about local culture and nature via indoor crafting experiences. Improve teamwork by trying our fun river rafting or develop map skills and a cultivate a sense of direction by participating in orienteering.

・Provide inclusive, equitable and quality education for everyone to promote lifelong learning opportunities.

Initiatives 2

Let nature help rejuvenate mental and physical well-being

・Facilities such as hot springs and mountain top terraces help create a relaxing and rejuvenating environment to promote well-being and help the body recover from stress and fatigue.
・A registered dietitian is on-hand to provide advice and counselling on diet, nutrition, health and sleep. Additionally, support is readily available for information regarding food allergies and sensitivities.
・Experience relief from urban life filled with congestion, air pollution and stress to enjoy nature, while helping to revitalize the local employment market.

・Help support and facilitate good connections between urban environments and rural areas.

Initiatives 3

Actively use locally sourced, seasonal produce to help promote the local region benefit the people

・We create delicious, seasonal menus which utilize local produce and drive sustainability goals.
Ingredients are grown from our own farms or purchased from local farmers, with seafood sourced from local ports. This helps to improve sustainability and promote the local economy.
・We do not consider non-sustainable suppliers or exotic ingredients and highly value fresh, seasonal, locally sourced ingredients to promote sustainability.
・We carefully consider the amount of ingredients purchased to prevent and reduce food waste.
・We cooperate with the local government to reduce waste and ensure garbage is thoroughly separated to promote recycling.

・Encourage sustainably sourced produce and consider sustainable consumption.
・Reduce CO2 footprint by prioritizing locally sourced produce with reduced transportation.
・Aid conservation efforts by selecting sustainable seafood products.
・Strengthen ties with local communities and develop global partnerships.

Initiatives 4

An international resort where people from multiple countries can meet & develop

・We actively welcome international staff from multiple countries/regions including; China, Korean, Indonesia, Vietnam and Europe. We aim to provide working opportunities to learn and develop to support the resort business while respecting different cultures, religions and customs.
・Our staff have a wide range of experiences and skills relating to international customs, languages, considerations. We aim to welcome international customers and provide excellent hospitality.
・We regularly welcome trainees from international universities and businesses to foster cooperation, improve understanding and create education opportunities.

Our Goal
・To provide high standards of hospitality without discriminating due to nationality, ethnicity or religion.
・Continue to welcome international staff to promote a diverse team and ensure equality between domestic and international staff.
・Promote and develop partnerships to improve educational opportunities for our staff and encourage international cooperation with universities and related businesses.

Creating a team with no gender inequality while ensuring the working environment is both enjoyable and fulfilling

・As an employer we aim to support female staff & families to ensure a satisfying working environment. We ensure maternity leave, childcare leave and established a nursery school within the hotel to support staff.
・As an all-season resort we aim to provide stable year-round employment with a multitude of opportunities.
・We promote a healthy work-life balance by creating staff housing, welfare services and an environment which supports extended vacations.

・ Eliminate any work place gender gap and ensure mothers can continue to work while safeguarding equal opportunities for all staff.
・Create a stable work environment where employees can feel valued with opportunities to train and develop.

Initiatives 6

Effective water management by utilizing local Mt Yotei water source

・Rusutsu Resort is situated at the base of Mt Yotei and is blessed with multiple water springs. Fresh water from the spring is first sterilized before being pumped into the hotel to be used as tap water in guest rooms and restaurants.

Our Goal
・To make effective use the abundant natural water resources to save energy, minimize waste and ensure high levels of water quality.

Initiatives 7

The Westin Rusutsu Resort, features its own set of initiatives

・During summer, over 80% of the fruits and vegetables used are locally sourced straight from Hokkaido farmers.
・Focusing on using high-quality, fresh local farm produce 90% of all pork is sourced directly from Rusutsu village, with approximately 70% of beef and chicken sourced from Hokkaido farms.
・Over 70% of seafood prepared at our ‘Kazahana’ restaurant is localy sourced from the coastal waters of Hokkaido.
・We refrain from using single use plastic items, such as straws or take-away containers.
・Disposable mini-bottles have been removed from all guest room amenities and have been replaced by larger multi-use bottles.

・ Promote local agriculture produce to help ensure the sustainability of consumption and production.
・ Combat climate change and CO2 emissions by reducing unnecessary transportation.
・Make effective use of local sustainable seafood and work to ensure conservation.
・ Protects the marine ecosystem and limit all pollution.
